I know it’s so hard to believe. But, if your kid has told you that they’re trans, it’s very likely true.

When my daughter informed me that she was a woman, at 19 years old, it was the greatest shock of my life. I didn’t believe her. I challenged her. I told her all the reasons this could not be possible. Some examples…

We would have known earlier. (The average age trans people come out is 18.5)

There were no signs. (None that others could see. Most trans people know inside early on.)

You loved boy things growing up. (So what? The rules were clear.)

You’ve had anxiety and other issues, it’s something else. (That’s part of gender dysphoria.)

It’s just a phase. You’re confused. (Only about 0.5% of people who come out change their mind. And how much of that small percentage is due to external pressure?)

Trust me, I understand the pain, the loss, and the fears you have for your child. I am one of you. I was deeply depressed when my daughter came out. I didn’t want it to be true. I know what you’re going through.

I also want you to know the potentially grave consequences of lingering in denial.
